Czarism: The Seven Gates of Hell

  • matt33 · 1 year ago
I went there last night with a few or my friends. we went past a red gate for a while and crossed 2 streams. we werent sure if we were taking the right path so we turned around after about 30 minutes. does anyone kno exactly which path you take? we took one past a red gate with an opening to your left and a trailer and some houses close to the right?
  • Jay · 1 year ago
Hey everyone. My name is Jay, and I am a student at Millersville University. A group of us in my dorm hall researched the 7 Gates of Hell for a few days and then took 2 trips there. The first time we went it was about 10:00pm. We met a group of paranormal investigators at the entrance, and they informed us that the path was indeed the site of paranormal activity, mostly in the forms of apparitions, mists and unexplained sounds. We walked the path for roughly 40 minutes, which was approximately 2 miles in. We crossed one dry and one wet/still running stream and passed through an open valley where no trees stood for about 100 yards. We proceeded into the next patch of woods, but the trail quickly disipated, and we turned back.
The next night we went, we started at about 12:00am and stayed until 3:15am. We proceeded beyond where we went the first night and followed a very overgrown, windy path. Both nights, however, none of us experienced any paranormal activity. We stopped multiple times, killed the lights, and asked the spirits to make noises...break branches, etc. Some people claimed to have heard humming, and at one point I thought I heard a scream in the distance. However, even when I heard it, I thought it may have been a neighbor nearby, considering if you look at an aerial view of the trail, there are homes nearby. I would encourage anyone who is interested in going to NOT go, because the trail is no different than walking in any other patch of woods that late at night, and the entire length of the trail has POSTED signs. The paranormal investigators told us the trail was for the public, but straying off the trail was tresspassing. Regardless, I would suggest not taking the chance. A tresspassing violation is a huge fine and could result in jail time. It's not worth it.

There should be three Gates. You take the middle one.
  • Phoenix Down · 1 year ago
We were there last night and its posted with signs all along the road that say NO TRESPASSING and POSTED AND PATROLLED if you find a white gate that has a sign at the corner stating that this is a STATE TREE FARM and all that you are at the right gate...When you walk back through the gate and start heading back the trail...which was at one point a gravel road and for not having been traveled for a long time is remarkably clear there are signs saying POSTED NO EXCUSES VIOLATORS WILL BE PROSECUTED TO THE FULLEST and some kind of ordinance number. We heard lots of strange noises but none of us saw anything we made it about half a mile to a mile and didn't see an abandoned house that's supposed to be there or any sign of another gate so decided that after a car went by really slow to turn back and come back during the day sometime we found some city papers that were soaking wet dated from several years ago attached to the back of the gate that we took pictures of that were pretty cryptic not typical documents you'd find at a tree farm not sure of there meaning at this point. This place is creepy as hell and all and we all had a serious case of something was up but nothing more...FOR NOW

Hey, I live in portsmouth New Hampshire.. I really like being scared not by haunted house amusement rides but by the real deal, I was think of driving to pa to visit these gates, idc if the whole storys not true or if the gates arnt all there still.. but did it give you that really creepy feeling, like the hairs on your neck feeling? because thats what i like expieriancing.

P.S is there any good camping spots there? its an 8 hour drive and we wouldnt have anyone old enough to rent a hotel so we would need a place to camp out at, maybe a camp site that wouldnt care were all 17.

The legend has it that all the patients died in a fire and they couldn't escape because of the gates, they were locked in. Today they have a lot of no Trustpassing signs and there were alot of Keep Out signs(but they were torn down). To access it you have to go on a gavel road, and the only gate that is still remaining up is the 1st one, but if you do not know the exact location you can easily pass it, because it is so overgrown with weeds, but their still is a path. I was there again today just during the day, and it is still creepy, and there were quite a few human bones(we just happened to have a doctor with us and thats what she said). But it is such a long walk and if you go wear pants.

living in Dover, Pa... I'm not that far away from Toad Rd. And, there are actually a few stories about things that have happened with the road itself, and with the whole seven gates thing. who knows what's true.... i mean, one MINOR thing could have happened way back when and over time people just elaborate the story. its bullshit, though it is funny, and VERY hilarious to tell out of town friends or spook other kids in your family while growing up. Anyways, it is said (or so I've been told) that there is one spot on Toad Road, that not long after it goes from pavement to gravel, look straight ahead and you should see the first gate, climb it and.... well there's the rest of the story (these are really just farm gates, nothing fancy). another story we've been told about the seven gates, is that they are all over York CO (haha, even one in the Galleria Mall), due to the whole Rehmeyer thing and back to the Salem Witch time. who knows. the other story we've been told..... down closer to druck valley road, but still on trout road, there use to be this old WHITE farm house (said to be kept painted a bright white for a reason). if you sat (in the dark) at the top of the hill, in a full moon light you could watch what was going on at the farm at night, like at the back of the house near the woods.... they told me it was the KKK house. a "friend" said he went in and its all covered in red, knocking blacks, dolls hanging from ropes, etc etc. i think its bull. the house is gone now, so it dont matter the stories any more...... its all just the imagination of stupid high schoolers driving around drunk or high and having fun at someone who is scareds expense. Enjoy!

I'm a well educated 40 yr old woman, my husband and I went through the gates when we were in high school, most were in place then. I grew up very close and my family settled in the area in the late 1700's. The "hospital" was very real and utilized as a medical center during the civil war. Many lives were lost there. I don't know if it was turned into a mental hospital or a satanic church (another story told 20+ yrs. ago). What I can tell you is that despite the snow on the ground around us the temperature rose with every gate, the noises increased and at the fifth gate we were met by the sound of viciously barking dogs.As for the KKK there were many hellam settlers who oposed the freeing of slaves, you can look up the ownerships in the history of hellam township. KKK was pretty common. I was shocked 10 yrs ago when we stopped at a bar in the middle of amish country in lancaster and found it to have full hooded figures and signage throughout proclaiming membership in the KKK. So don't ever dismiss that posibility, crazy people and bigots populate us today just as much as then.
  • Becka · 1 year ago
What bar?? I live in Lancaster and I think that's hilarious! I'm sure they're everywhere, but these people are seriously retarded I'm tellin ya!! (i'm from jersey) Anyway, I have never visited the gates, but I heard that the first is creepy, the second you see shadows and such, at the third you hear things, at the fourth you feel eyes watching you, and at the fifth you feel things touching you. I've never heard of anybody making it to, or back from the sixth and seventh. Supposedly the gates and hospital are torn down. These inmates were severely, like murderously crazy, and when they all got out from the fire, they had to be killed. If you look it up, everything is very unclear, but from what I know, the gates are mostly gone or so scattered, that most people go in the complete wrong direction. I would have tried this years ago, but I just had a baby, so I won't risk anything!! It reminds me of a ton of old stories in New Hope and Lambertville (Gravity Hill hahaha)

There is an old white farmhouse that sits on a hill at the end of what used to be Toad Road and Codorus Furnace Road in Hellam Township. This farmhouse was used during the Revolutionary War to house wounded prisoners of war. It is said to be haunted by these ghosts.
  • joeseph · 1 year ago
I live in dover as well and i have family that live on trout run road not very far from the so called 7 gates of hell but my aunt did tell me that there was some cult back in the cornfeilds and i saw the house but i think it was abandond but anyway i heard that story as well
  • MSFproductions · 1 year ago
Considering that Trout Run Rd & Range Rd are connected and my kids school bus travels it and I've driven it hundreds of times. This legend always makes me laugh. I live in Brook Haven Trailer Park along Druck Valley Rd. The next rd to mine is Range Rd. The Zip for my area is 17406. Go ahead and Google Range Rd and the zip code. You will also see Trout Run Rd. For all you Urban legend Believers. I LMAO at you all. I am so tired of people mentioning the 7 gates of when I say were I live.
  • just me · 1 year ago
i grew up in that area and inthe late 70"s and early 80"s i spent some time there. there werent 7 gates then some of the gates that were there people took. i hunted, fished and trapped that area and never saw anything. peoples imaginations get carried away. we wouldnt be here right now if they didnt!
  • Oxbow · 1 year ago
Stay away....Stay far away....please. The things that go on there are not something you want to be a part of. The 7 gates have nothing at all to do with Hell or ghosts. There was never any Insane asylum or massacre. There are no boogeymen there. The location is right in the middle of an Extreme Low Frequency and microwave test ares. That area can at times do very bad things to your brain and your thought patterns. If you go there, you won't find the devil or hordes of ghosts, but you may end up suicidal with your brains fried and jeep full of people who will follow you, get your license number and make you life hell. it's not woth it. it's just a field in the middle of a very bad area
  • local · 1 year ago
that can not be true. i live in the general area of where the gates are soposed to be,and i have never seen eneything that would sugest that that was happening
  • Barbara R · 1 year ago
"extreme low frequency"? can you elaborate on that? is it an actual government testing area?
  • Rutnier · 9 months ago
Oxbow is right, why would you think police would care about stupid ghost that is imagination, they are there because it goverment test.

On Nov. 1, 2008, I am staying at The Farnsworth Inn in Gettysburg (it's said to be one of the most haunted hotels in the area). We plan to explore historic Gettysburg and then end up at Devil's Den to see if we find anything there. I will be leaving Gettysburg Nov. 2nd. Since York is only about 45 min. from Gettysburg, I was thinking of going to try to find the Seven Gates of Hell. If you can send me any media you have, that would be great!!! My email is klpryor@comcast.net.

Heyy.. gas is WAY too expensive and I can't afford another fucking ticket (haha), but I'm kind of interested myself. If you don't mind, could you send me that video as well? I'm not just some little kid looking for kicks, I'm just really interested in 'dark history'. I've lived in MA my whole life (which is supposed to have all of this "haunted" shit in and around Salem) and I think the scariest thing I've ever seen was just strange houses in the woods when I was younger. We had no shame - we got into them. Nothing there, though.
So if you could send that video to me, I'd appreciate it.
P.S. That's mad cool that even though it scared the shit out of you, you're still willing to send the video to ppl.
    Thank you.

I have been to the area but I only went so far in. I felt like something was watching me. I came out with unexplained scratches on my upper legs and the grass I walked through would not have caused that. I am very interested in seeing your video. Please email it to me so I can see it. Thanks.

Hi. I'm 16 and very gullible so I hope you haven't made this story up since I'm creeped out just reading it. As someone who has always been interested in the supernatural and strange occurances like these, I am contacting you to see if I can find out a ittle bit more on the subject and have a little more proof then various messages on a chat forum so I can decide about this for myself. I am not in a position where I can even visit this place so please don't worry-I am just very interested and would like to see the video and hear about any infromation you might have if I may. Thank you!

My brother claims to have been in the area. With some friends, one of whom lived near there. They never made it to the first gate as strange things happened before making it there to chase them away. According to him, this area is now been developed with homes and the trees having been removed. I imagine all this hoopla is due to the fact that it is located very near Rocky Ridge County Park which is also supposed to be haunted.
  • Annie · 1 year ago
Ok, so obviously there is a lot of belief and disbelief on this page. I live in York so heres the truth: YES, there is such a thing as the 7 Gates of Hell. Some people on this page say that there is nothing there, or that it is a newly built development now. If you did go, and all you saw were houses in a development, you're not even in the right area. There really is an old abandoned farm area on formerly-called Toad Road (or Trout Run). There used to be seven gates, they are now torn down due to people trespassing in the private area. You can still travel the path, which is VERY long (almost miles between each gate), and some people say they see/feel strange or creepy things, and some people claim that nothing happened to them. I have heard multiple stories. My own story is that me and my friends went there, and nothing happened to us than feeling creeped out. We got a feeling like something was watching us, but who knows? My advice is that if you want some fun and to be creeped out, go ahead and visit.
NOTE: There are cops everywhere around the road leading to the gates, so be aware. They WILL pull anyone over who looks like they are heading towards the gates. The 7 Gates of Hell are on a private property, so if you get caught, prepare to pay the fines for trespassing.
  • Garrett · 1 year ago
hey. me and my friends were planning on go this friday. what do you think is the best way to get there without getting pulled over by cops. i heard that you can park about a half mile to a mile away and walk from there but i dont know.
  • scotty · 1 year ago
dont go. me and five of my freinds spent six hours on sunday night walking through the woods and theres nothing. there is nothing there at all. we followed every trail straight ahead of the turn off, walked to the left through the high grass all the way to the bottom of the hill and crossed the stream. all it did was get everyone wet and pissed off. its a waste of anyones time. dont bother
  • klp1976 · 1 year ago
(scotty) I'm starting to believe you! All this talk of this place and not one person on here has proof of any kind! I have pictures/videos/voice recordings from every "haunted" place I've been!!! I've captured some orbs, weird voices, unexplainable pics...etc...etc If there is such a place as the Seven Gates of Hell, people that went there would be more willing to share pictures or videos, not just tell the same story over and over!!!!
  • Mer · 1 year ago
Hello. In a book with the title Weird Pennsylvania by Matt Lake it shows pictures of The Seven Gates and also the house with very intrsting tales of course no one will ever know if it is real or not if they do not go. it is right down the street from my house and I am a christan so i felt very creeped out when we drove by the house of raymayer ( sorry no quite sure of the spelling ) So personlly I don't like to mess with things like that but I belive that there is something there.

I wonder, i heard a story that anyone who even passed one step to the gate dies ( not instantly ) if you entere the forest , thats where you will neevr come back . A guy once passed every gate and claimed that he saw running people on fire and other people killing people, he ran and jumped to the back of a bush so they wouldnt catch him . The guy made it out and even passed the 5th gate ! He survived and said that he saw hounds. He had like a sort of poem here it is "Passing that gates is a great mistake , death awiats you in the 5th gate , if you pass you will see the doom the end of your life.

I google earthed where trout run road is and there is no way there is even 8 miles of trees like they say how long the trail is. Also, there and houses all around. there is no way it can even be there. if someone tells me exactly what point the trail is or if there is a house or something where you can enter the trail i can see if there is even a trail on the map.
  • Kylee · 1 year ago
i google earthed it and i saw the trail... the wholeeee trail.

if you type in trout road.. or w/e its called (i forget now) you see where it is (a faded drive way) the trail branches off of the drive way tword NO HOUSES... at the end you see a patch of green, where the asylum must be/have been.

This place is a very unholy place that has affected me as well as my husband's life greatly. About ten years ago (my junior year in high school), my boyfriend (now my husband), and four other friends decided to make this journey. Back then, most gates were still up. We parked and walked to the first gate. Of course being the rebellious kids that we were, we ignored all no trespassing signs. During the beginning of our hike, one of our friends who was wearing a scapula (a necklace that Catholics wear), became very ill. Infact she became so ill that we had to carry her. We should have turned back then but we decided to continue. By the time we reached the second, gate we could hear screams in the distance and saw figures moving throughout the woods. This is where we decided to turn back as our friend was foaming at the mouth. I swear to this day that I saw three men being stabbed. Once we got back to the car, we noticed that our friends scapula had burn marks and blood on it. We took her to the hospital where she died of "poisoning." I believe that some kind of demonic creature was targeting her. I can never forgive myself for letting this happen. I now live in York. My husband and I are very involved in the Catholic church and encourage anyone to stay away. This is the first time that I have revealed this story and it is a very emotional time for me. I am crying as I type this. I needed to tell people this.
  • Benjamin · 11 months ago
I am so sorry to hear about your friends death! I am a Catholic my self, and in matter of fact, live a few miles from the gates. About how many miles did you you travel down the path until your friend got sick? Because i probably will never be able to find this blog again, please reply via e-mail. Thank you much.

Luicille thats probably the biggest bullsh*t I've ever seen. This place isn't even legit. Look on google earth or Live Map the "trail" leads to an open patch then modern houses. Where the hell is the abandon house thats suppose to be there? The trail doesn't even look a 2 miles long. Plus there is no paper trail leading to an asylum ever being there, or for a matter a-fact in york county? I'd like to go there and believe so someone prove me wrong?
  • Stephanie · 8 months ago
    Wow..what a tragic story..
I'm sorry you went through all that. It is good that you shared it. I believe you and I believe in ghosts and demons. Recently I had a bad experience at Amity Hall in Duncannon. All we did was drive past the site slowly in the car, and I suddenly felt a deep, intense fear. I'm not exaggerating when I say I was terrified. I don't even remember the last time I was so deeply scared. My calf muscles were trembling as if I were very cold. It is good that we got out of there when we did. I believe you when you say that something demonic was targeting your friend, possessing her or taking her energy somehow, I think we can never underestimate the paranormal and the cruelty of demons. I am Catholic too and have been very active in the faith. I think it is one of the best things in my life. I think you need to forgive yourself for the incident at the Seven Gates. You were just a couple of naive kids who were taken advantage of. Please don't feel guilty about your friend's death anymore. I will pray for you, your husband and friend. Thank you for sharing your story, I think more people need to share experiences like that, to keep others safe.

i have been researching this for like a week or so. me and 3 friends are planning a trip down and are gathering all the info we can. we have found a great deal if conflicting info. dogs, people in hoods, people getting sick, people tweaking out, all kinds of stuff.

are the gates in order straight back? like if i find the first one and walk straight back will i go through the rest or are they scattered?

is it really 8 miles? looking at topographical and road maps i cant see how it would stretch back more than 2 miles.

Me and my friend had just returned from the gates we had only made it to the second gate when i had noticed a moving shadow and then after which we peered forward only to find a light had been light in the distance it did not appear to have been in a window nor b any modern day light. We turned and returned to the car once back we had noticed the light was no longer there. I think we will return and come up with a more sound conclusion.

    Hey John.
So Im Way Confused Everyones Talking About Gates. I Was Told They Were Tunnels. I Dont Know I Actually Experienced Things UNlike Almost Every One Else. I Was There In A Tunnel Apperently The First Gate Couldnt Find Anything Else But Anyway. We Messed Up The Fist Time Trying To Find All Tunnels We Couldn't Though. So We Went Back And re-did It Only Using The First Tunnel. We Seen My Boyfriends Cats name Appear But Nothing Else Just The Name Cole. Which IS Actually A Very Uncommon Name Considering All The Other Ones We Seen. We Heard Some Dogs Thought Nothing Of It Though. We Didnt Really Have AnythignElse Except A Da-Dumn Noice Which He ThOUGHt Sounded Like The Train. We Decided To Go Back Through Since We Had Seen The Name. So We Went Back And Decided To Give It Another Try. Honestly The First Time We Were Pulled Further Back. This Time We Were Center In The Middle Of The Tunnel. YEa It Got More Intence. I Couldnt See The Side That Said Cole But Apperently It Appeared Again. This Time After A Couple Mins. They Said They Seen Blood On It. After That We Heard Wood Crackling, Or Maybe Someone Running Through the Woods Not Really Sure. After That I Was Scared I HEard That The KKK Was Centered Around Hells Gates. Anyways Yea So Then We Heard Tabbing On The Window CLosest To The Name We Got really Scared So We Started The Car And We Heard It 4 Times In All Being In The Middle I Dont Think Anyone COuld Run That Quick But We looked Back And Didnt See Anything. When We Looked Back Since It Was Part Of The Directions We actually Did See Hells Gate Close. Idk They Saw Nothing At All just No Tunnel Nothing Was Their To Them But I Sware It look Like A Tan Almost Burned COlor Like Castle Wall It Was Crazy And I Was Scared Anyways I Was Wondering If That Is The Gate That We Went To Cause It Seems Like No Ones Saying Anything About Train Tunnels And We Didnt Know About Trails And I Think It Would Be Crazy To Get Out Of The Car In The First Place. I Was Wondering If You COuld Also Send Me The Video. They Wanna Go Back And I Read All These Experiences And Wat They Heard And We HEard It Too But Didnt EVen Realize It Was A Bad Sign. I Would Just Like To Make Sure Its Ok First. So I Was Even Wondering If Wat You Guys Are Talking Bout Is ROund Brazil I Seen Pa. Or Something So I Would Love To Get The Video To Make Sure Its Ok Up There..

of course since there legends, it creates a mind fuck for you if you find the right trail...(btw, its the middle red gate for the 1st, other two are distractions) but your mind will make you see things. I have never been and don't care if its true or not but I love urban legends and experiencing them myself since like I said, your mind screws with you and you have fun. I would like to go sometime so if anyone wants to organize a trip, email me mjconlon@gmail.com

This was our experience at the 7 gates of hell

    7 Gates Of Hell

I would like to share my experience of the "7 Gates Of Hell", as rumor would call it. Does the "7 Gates Of Hell" really exists? I would say, it is as real as any place you have visited that is haunted or as some would say roamed by restless souls that believe they still have a purpose left on earth. I guess we could all go on arguing the point of what is real and what is not. Many stories have been told about the "7 Gates Of Hell", I won't go into all the stories because I know how things can get changed around or even blown up if you would like to read stories about the "7 Gates Of Hell" all you have to do is a search on the web and you will find many. I am not here to rebuke the stories told or to lay claim to the truth of any of them, I am only here to share my experience of "The 7 Gates Of Hell". I will, however, give you background info on how the "7 Gates Of Hell" became what we know of it today. The "truth" in the background I am not sure of. I wasn't born in the time of the mayhem, but as legend would have it, (and doing a search on it you may find the legend to be different) there once was an Insane Asylum in the mountains off of Toad Rd. bordering York, Pa. where many mental patients were held. The reason for it being so far out was for the protection of the towns people they didn't want "Crazy" people being held in a place so close to where they and there children lived. Though the town was unaware of the cruel and vial things that were being done to the patients and if they did would they care? Who can say? Anyway, late one night the patients of the asylum fought back against the staff. Many on both sides perished in the blood bath, but many of the patients escaped and ran to the woods behind the asylum. As soon as the towns people learned of the escape they feared for there lives and sent a posse out to take down what were known as the "Crazy" people. To shorten the story a little the posse chased the patients through 7 fields where blood and body parts were laid to rest on the ground. The 7th field was where the biggest blood bath accured and many people died including all of the patients from the asylum; thus, becoming the 7th gate. So... the 7 fields became the 7 gates. At the beginning of each field there is a boarder which is considered the gate, what the gates (boarders) consist of I do not know. The 3rd gate was as far as we went which I will get into later. Anyway, that is the background that I researched on the "7 Gates Of Hell".
It was about 9:00 p.m. on a Saturday night in October when 3 of us had just finished researching the "7 Gates Of Hell". At the time I lived in Harrisburg so it wasn't much of a drive for us, an hour and a half maybe 2 at the most. No one was timing this and we were all excited. It wasn't really too hard to find, we past it only once. We were driving up an old dirt road on the mountain called Toad Rd. It was very dark, as we drove along we came to a sharp corner where there was a large pull off, at the time we didn't know that was the first gate. As we approached the pull off, there was a guy and a girl standing there in the dark no car, no lights, nothing. So we continued to drive and we came to a back road that was paved and decided we must have went too far. We turned around when we came upon the sharp corner and the large pull off the couple was still standing in the same spot. I stopped and asked them if they knew where the "7 Gates Of Hell" were. They replied with, "Why its right here". I asked them if they were there to check it out as well. The guy said, "Yes we are but, we seemed to have forgotten our flashlight, would you mind if we joined you?" Being the nice people we are, we said," not at all." I backed up and pulled our car into the pull off. We got out of the car and locked the doors, flashlights in hand, the darkness still seemed to cling to us as the dome light in the car dimmed and then went out, all was quiet not a sound. We pointed our flashlights in the direction of the first gate which in fact, was two very old cow gates chained together with a chain that looked rusty enough to break if you touched it. The gates were'nt in any better shape, old rusted and leaning against a big tree you could barely tell that they once held the color of red paint or was it even paint at all? (No really I believe it was paint.) So we decided to venture on, we went around the left side of the gates and followed what seemed to be barely a path. The ground was very wet and we sunk in it as we walked. While we continued on my girlfriend held my hand, our friend beside us and the two strangers following with out looking back. I asked them where the asylum was, they told me it had been torn down a while ago. Seems the curious ghost seekers were tresspassing in the building and the land owners were afraid someone was going to get hurt so they tore it down. We continued to walk in silence, not a sound in the night, just the darkness covering over us like black ink being poured from the sky it was "very" dark. We walked a ways before we came to what is known as the second gate, a small dried up creek bed. There was a large tree down and we had to go under it to continue on, so we did. Still silence about 30 to 40 feet past the second gate you could hear what seemed to be people running in the woods. Not just one here or one there but everywhere, and faint screams that sent chills up your back then it would stop. We would walk a little more and it would begin again. I was reluctant to continue on but being the man that I am, I don't like to show fear and I pride myself on facing any fears I come up on; besides, I didn't want the girls to think I was a wimp, especially my girlfriend, she was very very reluctant to go on but I tugged her hand and she continued with me. The couple was behind us still following in silence. We finally came to what is known as the 3rd gate. How far in were we? Hard to say with all that was going on around us, time and distance was forgotten .We stopped at the 3rd gate, a line of old barrels separating one field from the other. Being that it was dark and the barrels were all but gone, we almost went past the third gate without even knowing it. When we stopped the girl from the couple behind us finally spoke, she said, "I don't think we belong here, I don't think we're wanted here, we should go back now". Her voice was soft and calm almost too calm, for what all was going on, but with all that was going on around me the way she acted was no concern to me at the time. I simply stated, I was going on and that if anyone wanted to go back they were more then welcome. I pushed through the third gate and began my walk through high grass prickers and downed trees. The path was very old and barely visible, I had to keep the flashlight on the path as not to lose it. Not to far after entering the third gate the girl behind us said, "Wait something fell on my face." Her companion was trying to look at her in the dark. I shined the flash light on her face, she was pale, I don't mean very white, I mean PALE. I saw nothing. I asked her what she felt, was it a leaf or a twig? She replied, "No it felt like water, like rain maybe" but the sky was clear and I didn't see any rain clouds on the drive here. I said," maybe it was just water or sap off a tree" and shined the light up into the trees, nothing, I didn't see a thing up there, really couldn't if I wanted to. I mean I did only have a flashlight not a spot light. I brought the light back to her face, she still looked very pale but she didn't appear to be scared. Then we heard what seemed to sound like raindrops hitting the leaves on the ground all around us, but we didn't feel nothing, not a drop. I looked toward the tree tops and the sky but saw nothing. Startled by the girls voice, I brought the flashlight back down so that I could see her face. There was no fear in her voice when she said, "I really think we should go back." I ignored her and turned intending to continue on when my girlfriend said, "What the hell is that smell?" I hadn't smelled anything and was just about to ask her what the hell she was talking about and to not start freaking on me, when it hit me, it hit me hard! The smell, the strong smell of death but not only the smell of death filled the air there was another smell there as well, a familiar one, but it didn't dawn on me at first what it was. Then all at once it came to me, gun powder, the acrid smell of gun powder. The smells were so strong it took your breath away and when I looked around everyone was either covering there mouth and nose with there hand or there shirt and the guy from the couple was using his coat. I wasn't about to let this "smell" stop me. I wanted to see more, I needed to. I wanted to know the truth. I so wanted to pass the 5th gate that supposably no one has ever made it past. I turned and pointed the flash light to the ground as the beam touched the ground, the guy behind me and myself right at the same time said, "blood." We all just stared at it for what seemed to be like 5 minutes, but I'm sure was only seconds. I said," Now wait, it may be just red leaves, lets not start spooking our selves." I reached down and picked one up and ran my finger across the surface, it smeared, it in fact was blood. I quickly dropped the leaf and wiped my hand on my pants. I then scanned the ground of the woods with the flashlight. There was blood everywhere, and I mean everywhere, as far as the beam of light could reach there was blood. I will not lie and say I wasn't scared or that the hair on the back of my neck wasn't sticking up like quills on a porkipine. My main concern was the girls. My girlfriend, her friend and the other girl from the couple. I feared for there lives and something deep inside me was telling me to get them out of there, get them to safety, get them as far from this place as I could. That's exactly what I started to do. I pulled my girls hand and she pulled her friends hand and off we went. My girlfriend took off like a race horse (looking back it was funny ,but at the time let me tell you what, there was no humor in it.) My girlfriend jumped over this log almost pulled me and her friend down face first in the path. Then the couple behind us in a very calm voice said, "Slow down, do not run, walk a steady pace but do not run." I don't know what it was but something in their voice made me listen. I didn't know or understand but it made sense . I pulled back hard on my girlfriends hand and in a very stern voice I said," Walk damn it Brandi, listen to them and walk" and I pulled hard again. She didn't want to walk but if you saw the size of me compared to her, she had no choice, so we walked a fast walk. Time and distance seemed to stand still, I lost track of both. All that was going through my head was get these people to safety. Don't be another headline in the newspapers. "FOUR YOUNG KIDS FOUND DEAD IN THE WOODS ON THE MOUNTAINS ABOVE YORK, MAN FOUND WONDERING TOAD RD. BLOOD STAINED CLOTHES, MUMBLING GOD I TRIED, OH GOD I TRIED" . Before I knew it we were back at the two gates headed to the car, the couple close behind us. The guy from the couple said Stop! We were standing only a few feet from the car and I stopped and turned to face the couple, the guy was asking me if I was ok and I said yes then he said," Shh listen." So we all stood still and quiet, he turned to face the gate and raised his left hand to his side and his fingers came up One, Two, Three when his third finger came up his companion shook her head and a shrill death cry rang through the air, it seemed to be a scream of a women. I really can't say, all I know is that my girlfriend's friend jumped in the car so fast that by the time I turned around she was already in the car, door closed and locking it. My girlfriend wasn't far behind. I started for the car and the guy said, "Wait, I want to show you something." I turned back around to face him, his hand was held out to me and in the palm of his hand was what looked to be a round piece of wire. In a low voice he said, "Take it." I looked up at him and then back down at the wire, still not taking it, I met his gaze again, he nodded, and I reached out and took the wire in my hand. It seemed to move in my fingers. Was it my nerves doing it? Still to this day I don't know, all I do know is that a chill went up my spine, my body seemed to go cold as if standing in a freezer, my eyes watered for no reason, then the wire seemed to get warm so I looked down at it again putting it closer to my face it seemed that the wire was actually a ring, a thin ring. Before I could see the design on it the ring got warmer and warmer. I handed the ring back to him but he would not take it, as if he didn't want to touch me or me touch him, who knows? Could have been my imagination, but it got so hot. I went to drop it, his hand was there in a flash to catch the ring. I looked in his eyes there seemed to be no emotion in his face or his eyes, he placed the ring on his finger. I asked him what the ring was, he said," It's my mantra." I was just about to ask him what in the hell just happened, when the girl and him, at the same time said, "Police." Not really thinking they said what I thought they said, because it seemed so out of place, I said," what?" In a very calm voice the girl said, "You better go, the police are coming and they don't take strangers hanging around here and tresspassing lightly, you better go now." I looked up the road then down the road, I didn't see head lights or sirens. I was about to tell her that, when the guy said "you better listen to her, you better go now." I got into the car started it up and backed out.I pulled away speeding the car up to about 55 on the dirt road. I know it was a little to fast for the kind of road I was on, but I needed to get the hell out of there. About a mile from the pull off I looked in my rear view mirror and could barely see the headlights and the flash from the sirens of a police car. How did they know? There are a lot of things about that place that make me look back and wonder, and that is the reason why I am planing another trip to the"7 Gates Of Hell" this time with a tape recorder and a video camera and also a digital camera. I will make it past the 5th Gate. That is my experience with the 7 Gates Of Hell take it as you will it's no matter to me and everyone has different beliefs. All I can say is if you do plan a trip there use every bit of caution that you can. Take a cell phone, make sure it works, don't go alone go in a group and stay together, let someone know your going, where its at and when you left. Do not throw caution to the wind, like they say better to be safe then sorry. So please use your head don't go into this alone or without knowing what your doing . I have always been fascinated by the spirit world, and have checked out many places and will check out many more. Which we will start posting on this site. Thank you for taking your time to read this. I really hope that if you go you take my advice. Peace.

I live a few minutes outside of york between york and harrisburgh, i had went up to the gates twice now - once i walked in through the first gate a ways and the second i just drove the road scoping scenery for the next time i go. Im not on here 2 argue with anybody if this shit is true or not - honestly i dont beleive in paranormal though i should, but i want to be proven wrong. Im on here 2 get a little information if anybody could help me, i went up to the corner and when facing what are beleived to be the gates theres a metal gate to the right that looks like its used by the house nearby and a gate to the left with high grass and a sorta clearing - and what kind of looks like a very old grown up path in between the two, witch way is the correct way in??? And does anybody live nearby it that actually has expeirienced it?? Ill tell you that when me and my freind walked through the first gate our other freind had such bad vibes he didnt wanna go so he stood near the beggining of the first gate taking pictures and being a look out for cops or people. Now mind you i dont even beleive we were on the right path after researching some things, though we were very close. As we walked we walked through it for about fifteen minutes maybe more and it had gotten very cold, and what we thought was odd was the fact there was no wildlife noises nothing, nothing was scurrying in the bushes at all no birds nothing. And all i know is both of us kept looking over our shoulders thinking we felt and heard somebody else walking with us. Soon my phone went off and our freind told us that people were walking up the road so we ran out and on the way out felt as if something was running beside us and i seen figures of people in the woods. Thats my story but i do plan to walk through the whole thing all 7 and either prove "i went through them all and nothing happened" or if its all true i wont be back i guess, though ill try. I am very interested in these things though i dont beleive in the paranormal - i also went to Amity Hall Inn witch is just past duncannon and i am going to Gettysburgh & Centrailia & The Witches Graveyard. If anybody can help me so i know where im walking with the 7 gates id really appreciate it and i will post the real story of what happens and i am going to take pictures and if i can record it in someway, so theres proof.

I was at this "7 Gates of Hell" at night about 3 years ago. I do not know if there is anything paranormal there or not because I didn't get out of my vehicle. The woods around the enterance are filled with No Trespassing signs, so I just sat in my truck on the road and looked with a spotlight. I left when I saw a van heading (west) towards me. I drove (east) past the van, and the guy from the house nearest the enterance to the gates (probably the landowner) pulled out of his driveway and raced after me. I made a fast u-turn in what I believed to be an empty field (which later turned out to be a neighboring yard) in order to evade the guy, and he also turned around and chased me all the way out to the main road. Apparently he was trying to get my license plate, and about 10 minutes later I got a call from the Hellam police as I was driving home on Route 30. The police said that the guy's neighbor could press charges for trespassing, but I never heard from them.
Whatever the case may be about the existence of paranormal activity beyond the gates, I suggest you bring some firearms to use against the nutcase who chases after every person that drives down "his" road. This guy apparently just sits at his living room window and looks for curious passers-by to harass and report to the cops (at least once every weekend, according to the police officer I spoke with). I don't intend to go back, but if you choose to go - you ought to stand your ground and give this guy what he deserves.

I found this post and figured I would add my experiences with this area. I have heard of the whole deal before and even tried to find it back in 2000 with a few friends during the day. All we found when we got there were some private property signs so we didn't bother. I never made any connections with where it was and where I went to camp until today.
Look up 515 Jerusalem School Rd. It is a camp- Camp Spirit. The look up the claimed area of the 7 gates. Based on what people are saying, you would basically end up at the camp if you started to follow the path. You would also be crossing multiple properties. The distance is NOT 8 miles.

It's really funny. When I was younger (ages 6-13) I went to this camp, over 10 years ago. There were TONS of spooky stories- what camp doesn't have them? We went on frequent walks to discover some scary stuff over those 7 years, both during the day and night (weekly sleepovers). The scariest thing we ever heard was a dog bark. During these many walks I cannot recall if we passed any gates but I do remember us trying to find a place that had been burned down or had a fire and was torn down. We did find a clearing that, to a child would fit the bill. Ohh...so scary. For a 10 year old!

The funniest part is now that I am looking at the map and thinking about it, we walked right by those gates...backwards. So what happens when you pass the 7th gate from the other side? Absolutely nothing!
Those screams? They might have been some camp kids. We used to have a blast trying to scare the crap out of each other in the middle of the woods at night. Who knew we might have been scaring big kids too?

She didn't want to walk but if yo u saw the size of me compared to her, she had no choice, so we walked a fast walk. Before I could see the design on it the ring got warmer and warmer .. Peace.

While we con tinued on my girlfriend held my hand, our friend beside us and the two strangers following with out looking back. I simply stated, I was going on an d that if anyone wanted to go back they were more then welcome. There was no fear in her voice when she said, "I really think we should go back." In local rumors, alot of kids clame that there is still things there that belong to the witch, but the house isnt safe. the floors is caved in at some points. one thing reported most commonly is candles being lit. i dont know but we are planning to go there as well, im sure you could find more information onlnie if anyone is interested in traveling there

hey yeah. We went to every neighbors house surrounding the area today. They said that the owner of most of that land lives at 4025 but we didn't have enough time to get to his house before dark, and the cops were already patrolling the area. Can you give me a hint as to which guy to go to. Or at least can I give you my number or aim username? Because we are probably going to end up seeing you there tomorrow. Please help us, we really got dissapointed and were so close to going in. my screen name is cjdoubleu and my name is Collin. Thanks lisa for your time.

Lisa... I went tonight...I talked to one of the three neighbors right by the first gate between trout run and ridge road..She said that she had lived in that specific location since childhood, and there was supposedly another 7 gates fourty years ago when her friends went. So I am still confused. Another landownder we talked to was that this whole thing was set up by one of the landownders a long time ago as a way of preventing trespassers on his lawn--he ended up painting red pole areas to keep people from tresspassing. So we tested their theory and tried going in, and it turns out cops got to the first gate and prevented us from moving through the second gate. I am planning on going back tomorrow night is there any way two of my friends can go in with you tomorrow? Let me know ASAP when you get this so i can get in further contact with you. Regardless, we will still be there tomorrow night documenting for a class. My email is listed and I will give you my mobile if you need it.

I live near this place. Actually across the codorus creek and down a few miles. We can see the open field and trees that are planted there now from our place. Anyway, if this story is true and I really don't know what to believe, are there at least relatives of the patients still lving anywhere to verify this story? I would think something like this happening would be well known.

I live close to this place, Actually across the Codorus creek and down the creek a few miles. We can see the open field and newly planted trees from our place. If this story is really true are there any relatives to these so-called patients at this hospital that can verify that such an event happened?

well listen law. Being that you live so close and all, maybe you can somehow find the person who owns all that land. That way, you can attain permission eventually discovering for yourself what actually happened in those mysterious woods. I am being completely serious. Email me if you are actually interested in exploring the gates. My email is posted to one of the earlier comments to lisa.

The owner lives right down the way dropped a note to see if I could check it for my mid-term class didn't hear anything so this is why this legends lives on ohhhhh cause it's so secretive who cares I am writing my paper on this legend it's fake spent hours at the york historical society looking over hours of archives (the almshouse) the so called psychiatric hospital in the 30's was located almost 6 miles away and today there stands a school in it's place so if there was a almshouse located on trout run rd there would be record since in the 30's it would have been run by the state as well it burned up and 50 to 100 mental people would have made the paper or the radio since television was something just beginning to take shape it's a great camp fire story but that's all it is

I have no idea who owns the property where this mental hospital was suppose to be. I'm more interested in who owns the field that once was a cornfield that now has a paved driveway and trees planted around it. There is no way I would walk back in those woods. Coyotes exist in them woods. Besides I'm going to ask some older people I know about this story. I never knew until this past weekend why that area was called the 7 gates of hell. Someone asked my husband about it at work, who then asked me about it. He came across this website and someother sites. We did drive back there this past weekend to see again exactly what people are talking about. If its private property I wouldn't attempt to even walk in those woods. it's spooky enough just driving past them.

Someone,I think on here. said it was probably a story to keep people away from this place, which looks like backfired since people are still trying to get to these gates. if I were that property owner I would open it up to the public and charge a small admission fee.

i'm going to the gates of hell this week with my friends and my sister.
i've heard that each gate does one specific thing.

like in the second one you get really itchy.
and in the fifth one you hear dogs and crazy shit.
i'm pumped to go sinse me and my friends just visited gravity hill and had a crazy experience.

This sounds a lot like something a drunken teenager would say. "Go through *hiccup* seven gates in *hiccup* York and you'll *hiccup* go to Hell *throws up from drinking so much*." Think about this Seven Gates of Hell crap, and laugh about how you believed something so ridiculous.
